Sermon Title: The TurnOver

{Scripture} John 2:13 – 16 (NRSV)

13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,

and the money changers seated at their tables.

15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle.
He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!”

Sermon Topic: The Turnover

{Intro}

Cleaning House
The Passover commemorates God’s miraculous deliverance of Israel from bondage in Egypt.

As Jesus entered the temple, we discovered that:
- He Found
- He Drove
- He Overturned
- He Told.

{1. He Found}

v14 In the temple he found
people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,
and the money changers seated at their tables.
What should’ve been a place of worship
had become a house of commerce.
The House of God was being abused and
the People of God were being exploited.
All Money isn’t Good Money

{#2 He Drove}

v15 Making a whip of cords,
he drove all of them out of the temple,
both the sheep and the cattle.
What is Jesus driving out of the church today?

{#3 He Overturned}

v15: He also poured out the coins
of the money changers
and overturned their tables.
Jesus critiqued their spiritual decline with The Turnover.

{#4 He Told}

V16: 16 He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here!
Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!”
What must be Turned Over in order to turn our hearts back to God?
Even during this heated critique, Jesus continued to point to grace
